Important points to consider when buying land. Wetlands Wetlands are considered a vital natural resource worthy of protection for environmental and economic reasons. The federal Clean Water Act gave protection to wetlands on a national level and also gave individual states the authority to regulate wetlands. Therefore, depending on its size type and significance, a wetland may be regulated by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the Army Corp. of Engineers or both. The state of Maine has several classifications of wetlands, including coastal wetlands, floodplain wetlands, forested wetlands, and freshwater wetlands. The definitions of these wetlands can be found in Maine Revised Statutes Title 38. All freshwater wetlands have been mapped and those maps are available at all municipal offices. In general, it is highly advisable that you contact the regulating authority or a land use professional regarding any activity you are contemplating in or near a wetland area. |
